 Dorreen Donatoni-King, founder and owner of SmileMaintainers, has been a professional in the field of orthodontics for over 37 years. Much of that time was spent as a single mother with children that were extremely involved in sports beginning in grade school, college and continue to be athletic as adults. Through the years, she has seen many sport related injuries in both children and adults during her career in dental offices. Many of these injuries could have been prevented or less involved to the teeth and jaws had the athlete been wearing a sportsguard that stayed in their mouth. Having replaced several costly retainers that were either lost, thrown away or eaten by the family dog for her own children, Donatoni-King says: "This alone would cause anyone to clench or grind their way to a nightguard or costly dental restorations!"In an effort to offer an affordable way to prevent sports injuries and maintain alignment after orthodontic treatment, Donatoni-King created Smile Maintainers.
In her extensive research, she discovered "PolyShok," a product and method developed by Dr. Dan Brecht of Sportguard Laboratories, Inc., Kent, Ohio. Dr. Brecht has been making the Bioguard Sports Mouthguard for over ten years.
